Born and raised in Hawaii, Derek joins Taft from Milton Academy where he taught English, served as a class dean, held the George C. Lee Teaching Chair, and coached girls varsity volleyball, guiding the team to the school's first Independent School League title in the sport. Derek’s previous teaching experience includes time at The Rectory School, Campbell Hall, and Punahou, his alma mater. Derek attended Boston University where he received his degree in English with a minor in film studies. While living in Boston, he played for the Boston Knights, a 9-man club volleyball team.  At Taft, Derek serves as the dorm head in ISP/Cruikshank with his wife Emily and their daughter Iris, he teaches four sections of English, and coaches both volleyball and basketball.
